Another Great Passage from our friends at The Berean Call

The following article was created and published by The Berean Call and is copied in its entirety from that site. As always, I highly recommend the writings of The Berean Call.

I believe this is a great statement of an important issue that we face tody. And rather than directing an assault against any particular program or position, it reminds us that, ultimately, the issue is one of "relationship."

Weaning Evangelicals Off the Word

By TBC Staff - MB

Apostasy is rampant within the evangelical church today. At least that’s my perspective as one who has observed religious trends and developments for three decades. Before I present my specific concerns, let me define some terms. The use of the word “evangelical” in this article simply refers to those who would say that the Bible is their authority in all matters of faith and practice. “Apostasy” consists of those teachings and practices that are contrary to the Word of God yet seduce and deceive both professing Christians and true believers. “Biblical apostasy” is a falling away that will result in a false Christianity under the control of the Antichrist: “Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away...”(2 Thessalonians 2:3). Although the culmination of the Apostasy takes place after the Rapture of the church, various aspects of this apostate religion have and will continue to ensnare many believers throughout its development.

At a certain point in the future, there will be a total rejection of biblical Christianity, succeeded by the religion of the Antichrist; it will maintain a veneer of Christianity that will prove acceptable to all religions. This perversion of Christianity doesn’t just suddenly happen once the Antichrist appears. The deception process began long ago in the Garden of Eden with Satan’s seduction of Eve, and it is becoming more and more of a corrupting influence within Christianity as the time of the appearing of the false messiah, whom the entire world will worship (Revelation 13), draws near.Satan began his dialogue with Eve by planting seeds of doubt regarding what God had commanded: “Yea, hath God said...?” (Genesis 3:1). This opening line of the Adversary has been the basis ever since for his principal strategy in inducing rebellion against God. Its implications impugning the character of God and sanctioning the rationalizations of man seem endless: Why would God keep something good from you?; Is He really in charge?; Does He make the rules?; You misunderstood His commands; There are no absolutes; You need to consider what He says from your own perspective, and so forth. Eve, although reiterating God’s command for the most part, adds her own erroneous thought to what God actually said: “...neither shall ye touch it” (3:3).

This is what happens when dialogues take place regarding absolutes: the truth is either added to or subtracted from. Tragically, many Christians see nothing wrong with rewriting God’s Word. They are perfectly content with Bible versions that have done exactly that.

In response to Eve, Satan blatantly rejects God’s warning that death would result from sin: “You will not surely die.” Making God out to be a liar or dismissing Him altogether has always been Satan’s game. The Serpent then convinces Eve that obeying God’s command would rob her of enlightenment, godhood, and knowledge—and thus severely limit her potential: “For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil” (3:5).

Variations of these basic lies from the one who was a liar from the beginning (John 8:44) have successfully deceived humanity throughout history. “Yea, hath God said...?” (Satan’s direct attack upon God’s Word) has even led both professing and true Christians into the Apostasy.

Questioning or rejecting what God has said in the Scriptures is at the heart of instigating religious rebellion. The reasons should be obvious: 1) If the Bible cannot be trusted as God’s specific communication to mankind, then we are left with nothing more than man’s opinions and guesses about God and what He desires; 2) Finite humanity’s speculations about its infinite Creator are not only terribly erroneous—they are evil, because they are generated by man’s sinful, self-serving nature; 3) Even a true believer could be led into darkness without the light and lamp of God’s Word (Psalm 119:105).

Although the Bible has been under various attacks for centuries, the latest “Yea, hath God said...?” strategy may be the Serpent of Old’s most deadly. The process involves weaning evangelical Christians away from the knowledge of, an understanding of, and a dependence upon the Word of God. The objective is to produce biblically shallow Christians who are functionally illiterate regarding what the Bible teaches, and who therefore have no accurate basis for, or interest in, discerning biblical truth from error. By “functionally illiterate” I mean that such evangelicals know how to read, and they have Bibles (of some sort), but they rarely read them, preferring to get their biblical content from some other source.

Conditioned by a subversive weaning process, these biblically shallow Christians have little or no concern about doctrine. They major in the experiential, with their feelings almost exclusively determining what they believe. The Apostle Paul, speaking prophetically of the Last Days, seemed to have these specifically in mind: “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables” (2 Timothy 4:3,4). Sensual “lusts” of the flesh and imagination are implied here.

A couple of decades ago, the extreme Charismatics and Pentecostals would have been the obvious reference point regarding Paul’s warning, given their obsession with healing, prosperity, and a spirituality energized by seeking after signs and wonders. Today, experiential Christianity has extended far beyond the bounds of what was considered a fringe evangelical element. It now pervades the entire church, including those denominations and movements once known for their conservative doctrinal views and biblical adherence. They have vigorously blocked the lying signs and wonders seduction at their front doors while opening wide their side entrances and youth rooms to the purveyors of the experiential in less obvious yet equally disastrous forms.
Before examples of today’s antibiblical experiential Christianity are presented, it needs to be understood that true Christianity is both doctrinal and experiential. It includes a personal relationship with Jesus Christ that begins when one has understood the doctrine (i.e., biblical teaching) of salvation—the Gospel of Christ—and has accepted it by faith. When this happens, the Spirit of Christ indwells that person (Ephesians 1:13; 4:30, Romans 8:9). As one understands all that He did for us, true love for Jesus follows.

Then, as one grows in his relationship with Jesus through knowing and obeying the Scriptures, one’s affection for Him increases. Furthermore, as one matures in the faith, the fruit of the Spirit is increasingly manifested: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance. These certainly involve the experiential. So what is the problem, then, with experiential Christianity?

The chief error today in the evangelical church is that experiences (feelings, emotions, passions, intuitions, etc.) have become the guide for entering into and attempting to establish true spirituality. Rather than subjective feelings and emotions being present as a result of one’s adherence to sound doctrine, they have become the judge of whether or not something is truly Christian. Instead of testing a teaching or practice or situation by the Word of God, the arbiter becomes “how one feels about it.” This puts the human imagination in the seat of judgment. That thought alone should provoke an emotion in the heart of every Bible-believing Christian: sheer horror! Doctrinally however, it’s even more frightening.

Twice in the Book of Proverbs, in almost exactly the same terms, we are told, “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death” (Proverbs 14:12; 16:25). In other words, if a man goes by what he thinks or feels, independently of and in opposition to what God has declared, the consequences for him will only generate destruction. Death is separation, the spirit and soul from the body; moreover, the ways of death include separating man from the light of God’s truth. “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them” (Isaiah 8:20).

Experientialism (what feels right to man) is a leaven working its way through the entire church as it undermines biblical truth. Today there are many infectious manifestations, with heavy emphasis upon the following: signs and wonders, faith-healing and prosperity, logos vs. rhema, the new apostles and prophets, kingdom-dominion, redeeming-the-culture missions, strategic spiritual warfare, inner-healing, 12-steps, Christian psychology, evangelical social-activism; ecumenism, church growth, purpose-driven, emerging church, contemplative/mysticism, church entertainment, contemporary worship, culturally accommodating Bible versions, and visually translated Bibles. All of these movements are in opposition to the clear teaching of God’s Word, yet multitudes follow them eagerly.

Although these diverse endeavors often overlap in terms of concepts and methods, they share a common trait: while giving lip service to the Scriptures, they all, whether through ignorance, self-delusion, or planned deceit, critically subvert its teachings. The way that seems right to a man—the way that feels right, produces numerical growth, seems more spiritual, moves one emotionally, appears to move God on one’s behalf, brings people together, makes people feel closer to God and better about themselves, is more positive, fills more pews, impresses the world, is not judgmental, etc.—that way is systematically eliminating any concern for sound doctrine in the church. This is experientialism in opposition to doctrine among evangelicals, and it has the church helping to usher in the Apostasy.

There is not enough space in this article to explain all the movements listed above. We have been writing about most of them for years. Many of them can be found by searching TBC’s website for related articles or the books we offer. Although they are connected at times by individuals, similar methodologies, or goals, the basic glue that essentially holds all of the movements together is the propensity for subjective experience over the written Word. All are working from this same unbiblical premise.

Extreme Charismatics and Pentecostals have a foundational teaching that God’s mode of communication today is to speak outside the Bible directly to His people, particularly through a new breed of apostles and prophets. This “new way” is called the rhema of God, a supposed contrast to logos, which is categorized as the old written form. One of it’s foremost leaders, C. Peter Wagner, claims that God is instructing the church in new ways of doing things through His modern prophets. Therefore, the Bible is of little or no value for judging what’s being promoted. This teaching is not only antibiblical but it has been the catalyst for the most spiritually spurious rituals of the last century, from the proliferation of false prophets to the so-called binding of territorial spirits to taking dominion over cities, countries, and ultimately the world “for the Lord.”

Hearing from and drawing experientially closer to God through techniques (e.g., occult visualization and meditation) is the practice of today’s evangelical contemplatives and mystics. Richard Foster and others have derived their so-called spiritual formation approach from Catholic “saints” and mystics. Foster created The Renovaré Spiritual Formation Bible to biblically support his mystical approach, yet its commentaries libel the Scriptures and demean sound doctrine. Foster introduced Eastern mystical techniques to the church decades ago in Celebration of Discipline (quickly adopted as mandatory reading for Campus Crusade leadership). Now his spiritual formation agenda is foundational to the Emerging Church, a widespread movement of 20-to-30-year-old evangelicals who are attracted to the sensual liturgies (candles, incense, chanting, vestments, rituals, statues, icons, etc.) of Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy as a supposed means of enhancing their spiritual formation.

Eugene Peterson, a contributor to The Renovaré Bible, has his own extremely popular Bible version (The Message). Experientialism through alleged poetic license is blatantly manifested throughout this humanistic and culturally acceptable perversion of God’s Word, which Rick Warren has done much to promote. Consider Matthew 16:25 in The Message: “Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to finding yourself, your true self.” Try finding any hint of one’s “true self” in any other Bible translation of this verse! This is the leaven of psychotherapy (which is wholly experiential and subjective) that has permeated the church.

Although on guard against the biblical abuses of the Charismatics, even the most conservative evangelical churches have been seduced by the self-oriented and feelings-sensitive methodologies of psychology. Nothing in contemporary Christianity has raised the cry of “Yea, hath God said...?” in challenging what the Scriptures clearly teach as has so-called Christian psychology. From psychobabble-ized and Christianized 12-Steps programs (e.g., “Celebrate Recovery,” which Saddleback has spread into thousands of churches) to the occult-ridden inner-healing ministries (e.g., Elijah House of John and Paula Sandford) to the humanistic self-teachings of Focus on the Family, the psycho-spiritual leaven spreads unabated.

The seeker-sensitive church-growth movement has pushed experientialism (and its close kin, pragmatism) into overdrive through the power of marketing. Sound doctrine, necessarily, is left by the wayside while churches meet the “felt needs” of consumers who are targeted as potential Christians.

Conviction of sin doesn’t feel good, nor does it sell well. The wishful thinking of a purpose-driven church that would attract the lost by turning to the world’s methods has become a Titanic that has ignored warnings and jettisoned its compass of the doctrine of Christ. While the orchestra searches for a contemporary chorus replacement for “Nearer My God To Thee,” the vessel is sinking into the depths of compromise while dispensing temporal lifejackets to save the world from its problems. This is the way that seems right to the world and to an astounding number of those who profess to believe the Bible.

Ironically, our day is seeing more Christian media and entertainment, and more Bibles of every sort. Yet, the result is a corruption of God’s truth because there is no heart for sound biblical doctrine, especially since marketing departments are now leading the way! At best, the evangelical church in the U.S. reflects the lukewarmness of the Laodiceans (Revelation 3:14-17): rich and increased with experiential goods that can only yield shallow Christians; at worst, it has become a willing contributor to the end-times delusion.

Yet even in the face of so troubling a situation, we have reason to be both encouraged and fruitful, that is, if we will obey Paul’s inspired exhortation: “Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee [from the growing apostasy]” (1 Timothy 4:16). Let us pray for one another to that end.

Uh-Yup...

"The great discovery is that the Bible is a message system: it’s not simply 66 books penned by 40 authors over thousands of years, the Bible is an integrated whole which bears evidence of supernatural engineering in every detail!"

My Heart Breaks, I Rejoice!

Monday evening Robert Steinkamp of Rejoice Marriage Ministries went home to be with the Lord. I cannot overstate the impact he and his wife, Charlyne, have had on my life and the lives of my children. The following is the tribute posted at the Rejoice Marriage Ministries website by Charlyne and also by Charlyne and Bob's daughter, Lori:

IN LOVING MEMORY OF
ROBERT E. STEINKAMP

December 28, 2010, 2:00 A.M.

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."
2 Timothy 4:7

Bob has been healed! Bob has gone home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Lori wrote the short message below that Bob was healed completely Monday evening at 9:45 P.M. Lori came over and spent the day with her dad and me before she flies out to Cincinnati tomorrow, Tuesday. I had called Hospice yesterday (Sunday) to come and visit us early today as Bob had more chest pain on Saturday night and all day Sunday. We had a very special night of prayer Sunday night with many family members with Bob and he took communion. Sunday night he slept and did not wake up with pain at all. Suddenly Monday afternoon shortly after 2 P.M. Bob had another heart attack. He became unconscious right away and died in the evening. God's plan and timing is perfect. I, Lori and Tom had a very special time with Bob and Tim was in contact with us all the time by telephone as he, his wife and two children with Lori's husband, Scott and their three children were all headed to Ohio. Lori leaves Tuesday afternoon on a plane for Ashley's surgery on Wednesday around 7:30 A.M. (see http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/ashleylassen)

We continue to ask for your prayers as funeral arrangements will be pending until Ashley gets to come home from Cincinnati; with no complications, probably by the weekend. Next week I and our children will plan Bob's celebration service knowing that Bob is in Heaven seeing Jesus, his parents, my parents and his two little grandchildren running up and down streets of gold, healed, worshiping and praising the Lord. Thank you for all your prayers and cards during his illness. Words cannot express the love that we have felt throughout this period of time. I love you all. I believe I know and understand why we have the miracle billboard up in Ft. Lauderdale at this specific time! Praise The Lord!

Written by Lori:
Jesus has healed Bob. Earlier this evening, Bob was welcomed into the arms of the Lord. We appreciate your prayers and encouraging words over these last few months. This is not a failure, as Bob has had the ultimate healing. Praise God from whom all blessings flow.

Amen.

Lost Postings...

I have, in the blog's files, a master file with a listing and notes on future postings that I've intended to write.

No doubt these are postings of great brilliance and importance (choke, giggle!) but I just haven't had the heart to lecture people much this year. (Don't my daughters wish that was true!) Okay, I haven't felt much like lecturing the general public this year!

I had stopped posting to get through some work-related commitments and then, when summer came, God grabbed my attention with a set of soul-shaking new awarenesses.

It has battered my confidence pretty good... not my confidence in God, not my confidence in Jesus, not my confidence in God's Word, His salvation or His Love.

It has shaken my confidence in me.

On many levels that has been a good thing. You learn a lot more when you don't think you already know. But it kind of takes the wind out of your sails on lecturing others. Hence few posts...

More is coming, but no one's starving and God hasn't gone anywhere just because I'm not prattling on and on. So I've been laying back until the inspiration directs otherwise.

Most likely there will be more soon.

God bless us and keep us until we share together in Him, again!

Love, Vearl

A Prayer Request

This morning I opened my email to find a letter from Robert Steinkamp of Rejoice Marriage Ministries. Bob has been diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. That is usually quick and terminal.

I have been so very impressed with their ministry over the last 3-4 years. It has borne fruit in me and many others. May I please impose on you to take a moment, right now as you read this, to pray for Bob, his wife Charlyne, and their extended family.

Healing and peace from Him who sits on the Throne to us all.

Long time...

I apologise for not posting since April.
I'm very sorry that the blog has been unused.

I've sat down several times to post since April, but each time I have had a "hitch in my spirit" that said not to.

Now that seems to be gone.

Thank you for your patience.

Much Love,

Vearl

A Short Testimony

Please allow me tell you what God has done for me.

In 2007 my wife left me and divorced me. She based it on a blizzard of accusations: some true, some half true and some false. All were designed to justify her decisions and gain sympathy and support from those who should have known better. God soon got my attention and made me to understand His plan for marriage and my life. It is the Bible's model of "One and Done."

As best I can in this weak flesh, I have committed to being available to forgive and restore our marriage if God opens that door or else to remain single the rest of my life. Scary? YES! Easy? No!

Satan is working overtime to "kill, steal and destroy" our homes and marriages. Statan is also fixing the game so the entire world is telling us that we can only find happiness through a new relationship after our homes and family are shattered. God's Word tells us that to do so is adultery. I've made lots of mistakes and taken a few wrong turns, but, thankfully, God's faithfulness is without end.

And here is more great news! By NOT seeking solace in the arms of a new woman, I have found the joys of peace in the arms of God in a way that I have never experienced before. Has He been faithful? Words cannot express how faithful, loving and caring God has been!

And, since I've NOT been busy trying to meet the needs of a new woman in a relationship that is in defiance of God, [which always takes extra time, guilt and justification,] I have been able to spend my time serving God and loving my children. Today I appreciate my daughters and teach them in ways that I never did before. I have always loved them and tried to be there for them, but I have never had the opportunity to focus on them and serve them as I do today.

As the pain and anger of my wife's actions has dulled over these years I have gained the perspective to see that most of the relationships I might have entered after the divorce would have resulted in much less happiness and none of the peace which I have today. After being, literally, abandoned my heart cried to be accepted, loved and appreciated by a woman. My heart said this would make me feel better and also, honestly, it would show that my wife was wrong about so many things. Thank you God, that you stopped me from following that path.

The road has been hard at times, but God has walked with me every step of the way. He provided wonderful support through the ministry of Rejoice Marriage Ministries in Pampano, Florida. (They are on the web here.) Sometimes, (sometimes often,) I still find myself desiring a loving mate but when I stop and think about what God has done for me I know that I'm wealthy beyond belief with Him as my lot.

Many think I'm crazy. (There are days when I can see their point.) Ultimately, I have been blessed.

God is faithful! I wanted to let you know.

“So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
- Matthew 6:31-34

Berean Call... You Go Guys!

This was today's Berean Call Newsletter. (Yep, I copied the whole thing!) Hit an important issue right on the head... an issue that I've been dealing with lately. Enjoy!

RENOWNED ATHEIST OFFERS GOOD THEOLOGY [Excerpts]

[In] Portland, Oregon, noted atheist Christopher Hitchens laid down some seriously good theology. Most people recognize Hitchens as the author of the bestselling book God Is Not Great: Why Religion Poisons Everything....In Portland he was interviewed by Unitarian minister Marilyn Sewell....The following exchange took place near the start of the interview:

Sewell: The religion you cite in your book is generally the fundamentalist faith of various kinds. I'm a liberal Christian, and I don't take the stories from the Scripture literally. I don't believe in the doctrine of atonement (that Jesus died for our sins, for example). Do you make any distinction between fundamentalist faith and liberal religion?

Hitchens: I would say that if you don't believe that Jesus of Nazareth was the Christ and Messiah, and that he rose again from the dead and by his sacrifice our sins are forgiven, you're really not in any meaningful sense a Christian.

- Dr. Ray Pritchard, "Christopher Hitchens Gets it Exactly Right," KeepBelieving.com (2-1-10)

Sewell wanted no part of that discussion so her next words are, "Let me go someplace else."

This little snippet demonstrates an important point about religious "God-talk." You can call yourself anything you like, but if you don't believe that Jesus is the Son of God who died on the cross for our sins and then rose from the dead, you are not "in any meaningful sense" a Christian.

In one of the delicious ironies of our time, an outspoken atheist grasps the central tenet of Christianity better than many Christians do. What you believe about Jesus Christ really does make a difference.

Berean Call Does It Again.

March 23, 2010

PROMINENT IN CHRIST'S SERVICE

"The more prominent you are in Christ's service, the more certain are you to be the butt of calumny [slander]. I have long ago said farewell to my character. I lost it in the earlier days of my ministry by being a little more zealous than suited a slumbering age. And I have never been able to regain it except in the sight of Him who judges all the earth, and in the hearts of those who love me for my work's sake."

- C.H. Spurgeon

It sure does explain a lot.

Gotta Love the Berean Call!

Not on Men's "Wisdom", but on God's Power

"When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power."
- 1 Corinthians 2:1-5
once, again...

"My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power."
Please Father, please use us this way.

Oopsy!

Sometimes we believe that God just can't make it without our help. And then we find ourselves carried along in the currents of His plans...

"While Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews made a united attack on Paul and brought him into court. “This man,” they charged, “is persuading the people to worship God in ways contrary to the law.”

Just as Paul was about to speak, Gallio said to the Jews, “If you Jews were making a complaint about some misdemeanor or serious crime, it would be reasonable for me to listen to you. But since it involves questions about words and names and your own law — settle the matter yourselves. I will not be a judge of such things.” So he had them ejected from the court. Then they all turned on Sosthenes the synagogue ruler and beat him in front of the court. But Gallio showed no concern whatever."

- Acts 18:12-17

And don't you love it! Paul girds up to launch into his own defense with one of his majestic sermons, he takes that first beig breath to sally forth and Gallio interrupts him by blowing a raspberry and throwing them ALL out.

And you think, "Oh no! Paul's out there alone with those guys! And they immediately turn on their leader, Sosthenes, and beat the fire out of him!

It almost sounds like a Coyote and Roadrunner cartoon. Afterwards you can imagine the battered and dusty Sosthenes holding up a crooked sign that says, "Oopsy!"

Reminds me of a sign I saw once about time for a "Super Bowl Sunday":

"Take God and give the points!"

Amen and amen!

I Would Be True

Ran across this little gem last night and thought others might enjoy it.

God bless ya'll!

I Would Be True

I would be true, for there are those who trust me;
I would be pure, for there are those who care;
I would be strong, for there is much to suffer;
I would be brave, for there is much to dare.

I would be friend of all--the foe, the friendless;
I would be giving, and forget the gift;
I would be humble, for I know my weakness;
I would look up, and laugh, and love and lift.

I would be faithful through each passing moment;
I would be constantly in touch with God;
I would be strong to follow where He leads me;
I would have faith to keep the path Christ trod.

Cheap Grace

I've been wanting to write a post about the topic "Cheap Grace". I started to do some general research on the topic and, oh, the humbling I received!

Starting in the New Testament and then generation after generation the problem has been the same. So many wonderful writings, so much truth. I just don't have anything to offer that compares to the writings of these wonderful men of God. Our problem is not a lack of truth, it is simply an unwillingness to follow.

It reminds me of a passage I read in a book many years ago. I googled it and was able to find it:
"An age is called Dark not because the light fails to shine, but because people refuse to see it."
— James Michener in the novel "Space"

That Just Hurts...

Just found this little gem in the "Quotes of the Week" archive at The Christian Arsenal web site.

"There is no surer sign of decay in a country than to see the rites of religion held in contempt."
- Niccolo Machiavelli
Ouch.

The irony doesn't get much finer than that... Machiavelli knew this while so many of our modern "born-again" clerics can't figure it out...

"Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt I had to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints. For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.

Though you already know all this, I want to remind you that the Lord delivered his people out of Egypt, but later destroyed those who did not believe."
- Jude 3-5

Hmmmm.... That's interesting....

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

You may think that I have burst forth into a festive Spring mood and have honored the season with a lovely re-design in

green... Green... GREEN!!!

Please...

Here's why that isn't so:

A) I'm blue/gray/green colorblind, so I wouldn't dally too much on anything green for fear of what it would look like to others,

B) All of my taste is my mouth, so I generally try to find something that looks either formal or stuffy or conservative and stick with others' ideas of what looks good, and

C) [furtive glance to the right!] [furtive glance to the left!]
Pssst! C'mover here close so others can't hear this....
The only thing I really care about is that the cross and Jesus is the most prominent thing on the page. After that, I'm not really that concerned about how it looks.

Here's the deal:
For some reason the blog template I've been using is now putting a dark background into the body text. It has also removed the "background color" control from the edit options for that template. You can't see the text for the dark background (and it has been doing something funky with the later posts on the page.)

I don't have any idea why. (Looking very, very innocent!)

This new look was the quickest template available that didn't create conflicts left and right. That's why I threw it up, I mean, used it. (That was an ironic choice of words!)

I'm still not sure it's going to handle archived posts properly, but it will have to do for tonight.

Would you please be so kind as to post a note and let me know if this is displaying properly on your computer? If the green is really hideous, you might want to let me know that too...

Thank you for visiting!

Holy Cow

Y'know, I've lightened up about a lot of stuff in the last 3 years. I mean, about A LOT of stuff! And frankly, I always believed that some parents are too hung up on sheltering their children from understanding the world. (That's just my take.)

But today I came across something that dropped my jaw. Take a look:

This was featured in an email ad from Toys-R-Us that I received. (I had to go take a look at it on the Toys-R-Us web site and that's where I snatched this picture.)

It's called the Nerf Strike Vulcan EBF-25 Blaster. It shoots foam "bullets" (and it looks like it should be gas-recoil operated.) It's yours for a mere $39.99 (on sale this week!) and it's ready to ship direct to you right now from Toys-R-Us.

My first thought was an image I have seen of a young African child holding an AK-47 and the tragic use of children as soldiers that's common in so many third-world conflicts.

My second thought was that, if I were 7 years old, this would be the Holy Grail of all toys! At 7 years old I would be longing for a Nerf Strike Vulcan EBF-25 Blaster with all of my heart and soul!

(And even today, now that I think about it, I could have some fun with one of these on the corner of my desk here at the bank...)

Yes, folks, I probably need professional help.

I definitely need your prayers...

(...and looking at this toy, I'm thinking maybe we all need prayer.)

Yesterday's Manna

I just learned that one of my favorite bloggers has decided that they may stop writing their blog. It made me genuinely sad. I have a real affection for this lady and her husband and her family.

My first instict was to say, "No! Please stay!" But I know that she's trying to follow God and I trust her and I trust God. God has used her in my life and she has been a blessing to me. The funny thing is that, being human, when it comes to "God's Blessings" I often want to cling more to the "blessings" and less to "God".

It reminds me of Manna...

"That evening quail came and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. When the dew was gone, thin flakes like frost on the ground appeared on the desert floor. When the Israelites saw it, they said to each other, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was.

Moses said to them, “It is the bread the Lord has given you to eat. This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Each one is to gather as much as he needs. Take an omer for each person you have in your tent.’”

The Israelites did as they were told; some gathered much, some little. And when they measured it by the omer, he who gathered much did not have too much, and he who gathered little did not have too little. Each one gathered as much as he needed.
Then Moses said to them, “No one is to keep any of it until morning.”

However, some of them paid no attention to Moses; they kept part of it until morning, but it was full of maggots and began to smell."

- Exodus 16:13-20 NIV

Manna. You got what you needed at that time. If you tried to depend on yesterday's manna you ate from a bowl of corruption. (I like that phrase "...a bowl of corruption..." that'll preach!)

Yesterday's manna = Today's filth.

A life following God is scary. Too often we think we just have to let go of our sins. That's sometimes scary. But often it is more scary to let go of yesterday's blessings. But if we cling to yesterday's blessings rather than Our Lord who gave them those blessings become today's rot and corruption.

We must cling to Him and to Him only. We have to surrender each day to His full provision.

Father I believe... ...Help my unbelief.

- 1 Pet 5:12

Maybe it's just my imagination... ...nevermind.

More Politics? No, but...

I just got this email:

"Some have said that the stimulus hasn't saved any jobs, but here is a case where at least one job was saved.

According to an unnamed source, Oregon State University Athletic Director Bob DeCarolis was considering firing their basketball coach, Craig Robinson, after an 8-11 start (2-5 in the Pac 10 conference). When word of this reached Washington, Undersecretary of Education Martha Kanter was dispatched to Corvallis with $17 million in stimulus money for the university. The source now says that Craig Robinson's job is safe for this year.

For the record, Coach Robinson just happens to be Michelle Obama's brother."

Oh, c'mon now...

$17 million to a state land grant university out of the Tens of Billions in the stimulus legislation? I used to clerk in ASU's grant accounting department and $17 million was just a drop in the bucket back in the mid-1980s! I bet Arizona State University and University of Arizona got a lot more stimulus money than OSU. If OSU only got $17 million then they definitely weren't bringing their "A" game. Oh, and by the way, a winning basketball program is worth a lot more money than $17 mil!

But here's the real problem I see in this message:

We don't have to paint all of our opponents
as crooks and thieves to stand against
their beliefs and policies.

We stand against them because we believe they are wrong, we believe they are misguided and we believe that their policies may cause harm to our nation. However, there is such a thing as a "worthy" opponent and we are to appropriately recognize and honor them as such. The Bible directly instructs us to:

"Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men.

At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy."

- Titus 3:1-5 NIV

During the Clinton administration there was such a storm of wild accusations that it ultimately served President Clinton very well. All of the wild and sensational accusations made the truly damning issues seem less important. By spreading the media's attention across so claims, many groundless, it lessened the impact of some very profound issues. I don't think many people are aware, even to this day, that the government of China materially interferred with the election of a U.S. President. That monstrous problem was swept away in our fascination with Monica's dress and "what the definition of "is" is."

If we must object to a crook or a thief, we are commanded to be gracious, dignified and very careful and be certain that all of the facts are in. In a word, we're supposed to be "fair."

“`Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly.

`Do not go about spreading slander among your people."

- Leviticus 19:15-16

To do otherwise cheapens us and makes us part of "the problem." And the problem is this:

President - Scandal (real or therwise)
Nixon (R) - Watergate, etc.
Ford (R) - Improper Pardon of Nixon, etc.
Carter (D) - Burt Vance affair, Billy Carter, etc.
Reagan (R) - November Surprise, Iran-Contra, etc.
Bush Sr. (R) - Iran-Contra Scandal, etc.
Clinton (D) - Whitewater, Lewinski-gate, etc.
Bush Jr. (R) - "Weapons of Mass Destruction", Blackwater & Halliburton, etc.
Obama (D) - Birth Certificate, Tax problems with appointees, etc.

Every administration for the past 40 years has been relentlessly attacked with accusations of scandal. With each new administration the accusatiuons are becoming more and more frenzied. These days the accusations of scandal are starting even before the person has won the election!

Both sides are desperate to find that one, great, Watergate-like scandal that will allow them to a) remove their opponent from office or b) reduce their effectiveness while in office by damaging their credability and forcing them to commit critical resources toward fighting the accusations.

BOTH sides are doing these hatchet jobs and it is not a legitimate use of power against your opponents. My point is not that we shouldn't investigate scandals. Some of the scandals listed above appear to have addressed legitimate, serious problems. My point is that Christians are supposed operate with the standard of being serious and sober in our judgement.

Rushing to judgement and promoting false accusations is NOT a minor issue. Slander and gossip are described as characteristics of those who God has given over to a “depraved mind”:

“Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless.”
- Romans 1:28-31

I'm as guilty as anyone. I cheered while we hunted down President Clinton by coming at him from every angle. “Die the Death of a Thousand Duck Pecks!” I said. Then I sat back mortified as "the loyal opposition" unleashed the same hatred and ferocity on President Bush. And as I watched them, God made it plain to me how I must have looked earlier.

“You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment? Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness leads you toward repentance?”
- Romans 2:1-4

Our government is designed with proper checks and balances to manage the pendulum swings in popular opinions and values. Tearing your opponent down with a long sequence of unfounded accusations is not a legitimate check or balance. In fact, it is an abuse of the power to investigate and prosecute. The ultimate victims of unfounded accusations are the American people whose properly elected officials are not being allowed to negotiate the political process to govern.

“Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. Do everything in love.”
- I Corinthians 16:13-14

"K.I.S.S."es

In honor of the recently passed Valentine's Day, here is a "K.I.S.S."

(I'm guessing that many of you know that "K.I.S.S." stands for "Keep It Simple Stupid".)

Today we, as a people, are pretty suspicious of complexity. In cases like a tax attorney who can take a person earning a zillion dollars and make them pay no taxes, we look at complexity as a morally suspicious indicator. Not necessarily "wrong", but something to keep an eye on. The old “I’m not sure how they did that but something just doesn’t look right…”

But today I listen to spiritual, economic and political questions being reduced to competing slogans: "Conservative" vs "Liberal", "Pro Life" vs "Pro Choice", Global Warming “Scarifiers” vs Global Warming “Deniers”... it goes on and on. And these are all issues where important, and often relatively complex, issues are reduced to a simple slogan pertaining to a simple principal which one side or the other believes is the core issue at play.

This is because real issues and real life aren’t simple and they aren’t always easily understood. We use slogans because they clean things up, make them neat (and sometimes they justify the conclusion we’ve already reached on a subject). The problem is that a simple slogan doesn’t really make the complexity go away. Slogans only hide the complexity. As we become adults we eventually acknowledge that “The Devil is in the details.” The very details the slogans help us ignore.

On the other hand, simple principles are often the key to sorting out and resolving complex issues. The problem is “finding the right principal for the problem” and, of course, maintaining the humility to understand that you may be wrong. I think I struggle with these issues on an almost daily basis and heaven knows I don’t have all the answers. But I have come to believe that "K.I.S.S." is important, but it also needs to be modified a little:

“Keep It Simple Stupid...
But Never Make It More Simple than It Really Is."

That’s right… “K.I.S.S.B.N.M.I.M.S.T.I.R.I.” (Yeah, right. I can see right now, that’s really gonna take off and sweep the globe!)

[…chuckle…]

I’m thinking maybe we should just seek God’s face, listen to Him and follow His direction, instead of all this other stuff. Is that too simple? Probably. I'm a simple guy...

“For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.”
- Proverbs 1:32-33

A Small Point about the Divorce Rate

I often hear people quoting a 55% or 60% divorce rate and mistakenly implying that any couple getting married faces less than "even odds" of making it "until death do we part." That isn't true.

What people are not considering is that the "Divorce Rate" incorporates people who are involved in multiple marriages. The divorce rate for second marriages is generally accepted to be around 66.7% and the odds of third (or higher) marriages ending in divorce is about 75%. When ALL marriages are added together you get an average divorce rate of 55% (or ~60% in some studies.)

If you work the math backwards, a 55% overall divorce rate implies a 44% divorce rate among couples marrying for the first time and that the remaining 56% of couples marrying for the first time will be married for life!

Imagine what this number would be if the church withdrew the imprimatur of approval from "christian" divorce. Can you imagine the dramatic difference this change would have on countless children's lives?

Here is how the numbers work for 1,000 couples marrying for the first time:

Calculating a Divorce Rate
Divorce Total Successful Total
Rate Divorces Marriages Marriages
1st Marriages 44.0% 440 560 1,000
2nd Marriages 66.7% 293 147 440
3rd Marriages 75.0% 220 73 293
TOTALS 55% !!! 953 780 1,733

[...and keeping in mind that these calculations assume that everyone who divorces remarries, etc. These calculations are just to demonstrate the flaw in using the overall average as a predictor of first marriages.]

Flogging the "Saints"

People have recently pointed out to me that I am "awful hard" on Christians. I taught a Sunday School lesson to a class of friends that was very direct about asking them to examine themselves and quanitify (to themselves) their real commitment to Christ. Some were offended and felt that the lesson was driven by my personal observations about them.

[sigh...]

I taught a lesson about people inapropriately elevating a church's order of worship to an "element of faith" and becoming too attached to thhe same. That became construed as, (by at least one,) an attack on church leadership.

[sigh...]

Read this blog and what will you find? Criticism of Christians...

[sigh...]

These all beg a very important question:

"Am I just a malcontent sowing disruption amongst the fellowship of believers?"

I've met folks like that and I've always hated dealing with them. I mean, let's face it, there will always be something to criticise and some folks will never pass up a chance to do so. Is that me?

I've questioned myself and searched my heart about my motives and here is what I find:

I find that being an American Christian, (with "Christian" politics, "Christian" education, "Christian" behavior, "Christian" world-views and "Christian" opinions,) has become more important to many people than being a follower of Christ.

The letters of the New Testament speak repeatedly and powerfully about unity among believers in following Christ, but American Christians have substituted conformity and accomodation of sin for that call to unity and diminsish the call to follow God in the interest of maintaining order and sustaining a status quo.

Finally, and most terribly, I find Christians clamoring about the disintegration of our country's values and principals at a time when the collapse of Christian integrity is one of the greatest factors propelling the destruction of our country's values and principals.

As I sit here and write these things, foremost in my mind is the Pastor at my church, a man I sincerely love and respect. Paul carries a burden for the lost in our community and seeks to serve and follow Christ. Am I criticising Paul? No. He's no more perfect than I am and he makes his share of mistakes, but I deeply believe his heart is all about serving Our Lord. And my heart goes out to him in the work he has taken on.

Leading a church today is like trying to herd cats. And in the effort to get a group of modern "believers", (with their narcissism and relentless self-centeredness,) to move in in a common direction requires acts that could easily unwind the very purpose of our gathering. As with the Pharisees, the drive to conform Christians to human rules threatens the very soul of believers. And I've seen this danger in the majority of churches I've visited in my adult life.

Ultimately there is only one remedy for this problem: Christ calling us as individuals and changing our hearts.

I put these lessons, these observations, out in the desire that God will find those "who have an ear to hear" and possibly use these postings within His Will for others. I do know He has used these points to reprimand me. I pray that God will protect others from unwarranted criticism and that hearts will be pricked only according to His Will.

Given my profound personal failings, I'm very wary of casting myself as a "Righteous Source of Truth sent to Reprimand Deluded Sinners and Misguided Saints!" I try to remain open to criticism while also taking it with a grain of salt. I've found that Jane Bean's saying from many years ago is still true about me, and probably similarly true about others:

"The Truth will set you free, but first it's gonna tick you off."

My deepest hope is that people will hear me out and then take these things before The Lord for His direction. And I understand and accept that anyone who believes that Christians' role is to stand in judgemnent of the lost are going to find my postings uncomfortable.

That's Better...

Y'know,I've got something on my mind about a local ministry that has been bothering me. And, though I want to stomp and snort and flap my arms about it all, the truth is that I'll just be another person sowing miscontent and confusion if I vent to anyone but God.

I guess I'd rather not. So let's praise God instead.

I love the song by Accapella "To Him Who Sits on the Throne":

To Him Who sits On the throne And unto the Lamb
Be praise and honor and glory and power, forever and ever!

I've got it on the player as I write.

"Within your temple, O God, we meditate on your unfailing love.

Like your name, O God, your praise reaches to the ends of the earth; your right hand is filled with righteousness. Mount Zion rejoices, the villages of Judah are glad
because of your judgments.

Walk about Zion, go around her, count her towers, consider well her ramparts,
view her citadels, that you may tell of them to the next generation.

For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end."
- Psalm 48:9-14

and the end of Psalm 22, that wonderful prophesy of the crucifixion which ends with praise...

"I will declare your name to my brothers;
in the congregation I will praise you.
You who fear the Lord, praise him!
All you descendants of Jacob, honor him!
Revere him, all you descendants of Israel!
For he has not despised or disdained
the suffering of the afflicted one;
he has not hidden his face from him
but has listened to his cry for help.

From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly;
before those who fear youe will I fulfill my vows.
The poor will eat and be satisfied;
they who seek the Lord will praise him—
may your hearts live forever!
All the ends of the earth
will remember and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations
will bow down before him,
for dominion belongs to the Lord
and he rules over the nations.

All the rich of the earth will feast and worship;
all who go down to the dust will kneel before him—
those who cannot keep themselves alive.
Posterity will serve him;
future generations will be told about the Lord.
They will proclaim his righteousness
to a people yet unborn—
for he has done it.
- Psalm 22:22-31

And now I think I can sleep.

We praise you Lord Jesus!

Well, I guess it beats following Jesus...

If I'm honest, I have to admit that sometimes Christians drive me nuts. Why? Here's an example, I just got the following email message:

"At the September 2007 Emmy awards, comedian Kathy Griffin's acceptance speech said, "A lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus." She went on to say,"Suck it, Jesus. This is my God now!" referring to the Emmy. As a Christian, I am offended by her hate speech. What do you think might have happened if she had made the hate speech against Muhammad????

Kathy Griffin has the right as an American to say what she thinks. As a Christian-American, so do I. Today I will refuse to watch any show that she may be on or purchase tickets to any event at which she would perform. What will you do? If you delete this, nothing bad will happen to you, but if you pass this on, you will truly have stood up for Jesus Christ. Let's see what the 80% of Christian-Americans can do."

Now let's stop, relax, and think this through...

Kathy Griffin is a shock comedienne. This is how she has made her reputation and fortune! Boycotting Kathy Griffin is like punishing a dog by feeding it bacon! Throwing a fit and publicizing a boycott is a gift to Ms. Griffin that rewards her comments. If you must punish her, the best way to do it is ignore her! I say "if" because I think there's a better way:

"I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves."
- Matthew 10:16 NIV

When did the followers of Jesus Christ
get called into the business of
punishing our enemies?

We're really confusing the lost! The Jesus who saved me and forgave me of so many, many sins past, present, and future told me:

"Love your enemies."

Did Jesus organize boycotts? Is this our Gospel, our Good News for the lost, boycotting comediennes?

When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power.
- 1 Corinthians 2:1-5

You aren't supposed to be surprised when lost people act in ignorance and foolishness. That's what we all did before Jesus came into our lives.

I would love to see Kathy Griffin's world view rattled. Wouldn't it be wonderful if someone would say something vile like that and then be absolutely smothered in an outpouring of love from Christ's followers in a tidal wave of compassion and generosity that overwhelmed their anger and bitterness? That's what Jesus did for me!

Paul said it best:
You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! For if, when we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
- Romans 5:6-11 NIV

Let's get over this whole boycott thing and stop forwarding these messages. Hitting the "delete" key will be a much more powerful display of the Good News we've been given.

The Unclean Vessel is...

NW, AZ, United States
Pretty much a sinner through and through. I have two daughters and a son. God has blessed me over and over on a scale that defies any relationship to my faithfulness to Him. I'm just trying to do right by the people I know and love more of them better, (while practicing hard at being a grumpy old man.)
