Sometimes we believe that God just can't make it without our help. And then we find ourselves carried along in the currents of His plans...
"While Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews made a united attack on Paul and brought him into court. “This man,” they charged, “is persuading the people to worship God in ways contrary to the law.”
Just as Paul was about to speak, Gallio said to the Jews, “If you Jews were making a complaint about some misdemeanor or serious crime, it would be reasonable for me to listen to you. But since it involves questions about words and names and your own law — settle the matter yourselves. I will not be a judge of such things.” So he had them ejected from the court. Then they all turned on Sosthenes the synagogue ruler and beat him in front of the court. But Gallio showed no concern whatever."
- Acts 18:12-17
And don't you love it! Paul girds up to launch into his own defense with one of his majestic sermons, he takes that first beig breath to sally forth and Gallio interrupts him by blowing a raspberry and throwing them ALL out.
And you think, "Oh no! Paul's out there alone with those guys! And they immediately turn on their leader, Sosthenes, and beat the fire out of him!
It almost sounds like a Coyote and Roadrunner cartoon. Afterwards you can imagine the battered and dusty Sosthenes holding up a crooked sign that says, "Oopsy!"
Reminds me of a sign I saw once about time for a "Super Bowl Sunday":
"Take God and give the points!"
Amen and amen!
